EUROSOLAR president Dr Hermann Scheer comments on the global summit on climate change in Copenhagen

The world’s climate is not a matter of one single government and not of the world organisation, but must be of national concern to every country!

What happened in Copenhagen was not truly surprising but pre-programmed. No use now singling out and blaming, in retrospect, governments – the United States or China – for the unsuccessful outcome. The underlying cause of the collective failure is the wrong premise in the climate negotiations of this 15th global summit during the past 15 years by now.

European power from the desert is a Fata Morgana PDF Print E-mail
DesertecPress release, Bonn, 13 July 2009

Prof.  Dr. Hermann Scheer, member of the German parliament, EUROSOLAR president and general chairman of the World Council for Renewable Energy, on the presentation of the DESERTEC Industrial Initiative in Munich today:

The Desertec project "Power for Northern Europe from the Sahara" desert is a Fata Morgana. The initiators know: There is no prospect of success. But for all that Desertec could be a good idea indeed. If the aim were to enable the Sahara countries to make the transition to energy generation completely from renewable sources, I would fully agree to the Desertec plan. The EU would make both an essential contribution towards stable economic and social prospects for the southern Mediterranean countries and to fighting climate change. Given their solar and wind power potentials, these countries would even be able to completely move to renewable energy for their electricity supply within less than 20 years. The beneficial effect to their economies would be much stronger compared with exporting power to Europe.

DESERTEC: Why roam far and wide, as the Good is found close to home PDF Print E-mail
solarteure120.jpgPress release, Bonn, 17 June 2009

Dr Hermann Scheer, member of the German parliament and EUROSOLAR president on the DESERTEC plan by German companies for solar power coming from North Africa, worth €400 billion:

Even though the project, as planned by German companies for solar power generation in North Africa, worth €400 billion - the so-called DESERTEC concept - is welcomed on every side (from the German federal government to Greenpeace) I warn against rash and overly high expectations of it and related decisions for subsidies. The anticipated actual project cost is underestimated, as are the timescales for its realization.

IRENA – milestone towards a comprehensive energy transition PDF Print E-mail

logo_irena_120.jpgPress release, Bonn/Berlin, May 28, 2009

The German Parliament has unanimously adopted the statute of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on Thursday. Hermann Scheer, member of the German Parliament and a driving force behind the establishment of IRENA, states in his Parliamentary speech: "It is immensely important that Germany, as initiator of the founding process of IRENA, swiftly advances the ratification. This is sending a clear signal of support for Germany's bid to host the headquarter of the agency in  Bonn. With the ratification by the parliament we underline: IRENA has to start its work as early as possible. The number of states that signed the statute is growing constantly. The need for an international governmental agency promoting the worldwide introduction of renewable energy is unquestionable."
