The Federal City of Bonn won the award due to numerous project initiatives implemented on the municipal level and its gained role as an international communication centre for the development of a global ecological perspective based on renewable energies. The implementation of cost-covering payments for solar electricity in 1995, the support program “Solar thermal energy”, as well as municipal initiatives for combined heat and power and the block type power station run by plant oil at the Rheindorfer harbor, are just few examples for the multitude of supported initiatives. The since 1996 annually held “Bonner Solarwochen” (Bonn Solar Weeks) organized by the federal city promoted the broad acceptance and engagement necessary to implement those projects. The special role of Bonn as an international communication centre and a platform for dialogue regarding the ecological energy perspective, was another important factor for the nomination. Repeatedly Bonn was host of international climate conferences and is the seat of 12 UNorganizations. Over 170 governmental and non – governmental organizations are located in Bonn, most of them working in the field of environment and development and are based on the “Solar Atmosphere” of the City increasingly focusing on mobilizing Renewable Energies. |
