Already in 1977 Dr. Michael Grupp founded the Synopsis Institute, situated in Lodève, France. It is reputated to be a small but very active R&D unit, that specializes in Renewable Energies technology applications and implementations. Dr. Grupp's and his team's wide range of achievements comprises among others the development of new testing methods for PV and solar thermal applications, that allow for a quality check and comparative testing as well as several solar thermal applications for developing countries like solar cookers, medical sterilisers and solar water heaters.

Synopsis has today already realized more than 110 installations in 32 countries together with its 100 international partners. This contributes to increase the living standard of the local populations: In southern Sudan for example a large integrated solar kitchen for 300 pupils was built. In other countries like Eritrea, Somalia and Ethopia, where the use of wood as an energy source has devastating ecological effects, solar thermal installations have been installed too. Dr. Michael Grupp is furthermore associate of the Solar Energy journal and has done a study on forest dynamics in Mali. He is visiting professor at the Institute for Technology and Society at the University of Vienna. For more than 25 years already his work and commitment has contributed to expand the use and effectivity of Renewable Energies.
