|  Prof. Frede Hvelplund has been active in the field of energy as researcher, planner and activist since the mid-1970s. He has played an important role behind making the University of Aalborg a pioneer institution in the renewable energy sector of Denmark.
His research focuses on the analysis of the relationship between energy policy, public regulation and environmental economics. Moreover, he is concerned with the development and implementation of renewable energy as well as energy efficiency technologies. The need for a change towards decentralised energy solutions is a theme that runs throughout his work. In his many books, Frede Hvelplund reveals the lack of democracy in the energy sector and shows the economic benefits which a society achieves by changing to renewable energy sources. Frede Hvelplund also investigates the obstacles to change in the energy sector and has developed concrete policy suggestions to surmount these hindrances. Besides his research and teaching activities, Frede Hvelplund is a member of various Danish as well as international energy committees. As part of the first Danish Wind Energy Commission (1975) he advocated an increase of wind energy policy in Denmark – against great odds. In addition, in the 1970s he participated in the formulation of an alternative energy scenario that explored future energy development in Denmark without nuclear energy. Prof Frede Hvelplund has always maintained independence of mind, even in times of political and administrative resistance to renewable energy.
