grab architekten ag is one of the pioneers of sustainable building in Switzerland. Achieving a high degree of energy efficiency and solar energy utilization at most optimal level is a fundamental quality the firm demands of its work. It is achieved and exemplified to perfection in "Kraftwerk B", a building located in the Swiss town of Bennau. The project was done with the backing of like-minded real estate company sanjo group.

In "Kraftwerk B" photovoltaics and solar thermal collectors are integrated directly into the building envelope. Thanks to its optimal thermal insulation the apartment block produces 10 per cent more energy than it needs and thus is Switzerland's first multi-family building 'energy plus'. The use of natural construction and building materials also satisfied demanding ecological criteria.

A 32 kWp photovoltaic system on the roof not only produces the electricity to power the entire building itself, but also excess electricity, which is fed into the public grid. A solar thermal system over nearly 150 m² integrates into its south facing façade and supplies all the energy needed for heating and also provides hot water for the building next to it.

Apart from the building's ideal energy supply, energy efficiency and a respectful use of natural resources has been a central focus of the architects' approach. The building is equipped with A++ rated energy saving appliances and a toilet-flushing rainwater fed system.

"Kraftwerk B" is a fine example of how full solar energy supply in combination with ecological and energy efficient building design can easily be realised in multi-family buildings as well.
