Zermatt SolarrestaurantZermatt Bergbahnen AG of Switzerland (Zermatt Mountain Cableways) has a longstanding commitment to protecting the environment in mountainous regions. It relies on optimized integrated building concepts for sustainability and energy efficiency.

Equipped with solar panels, one of the company’s showpieces is the Klein Matterhorn Glacier Restaurant close to the highest cable car station in Europe at 3,820m in altitude. It is serviced from Zermatt. The solar restaurant’s optimal thermal insulation and triple glazed windows considerably reduce the energy required for heating. Its 22 kWp photovoltaic system optimally integrates into the south facing façade and supplies about one-third of the building’s complete demand for energy, including a low impact sewage treatment plant. The structure blends into the high alpine landscape and withstands the extreme snow and weather events.

Another façade integrated 35 kWp photovoltaic system is at “Trockener Steg“ mid station at 2,929m in altitude. An already earlier installed facility at Hohtälli cableway station allows energy-autarkic wastewater treatment at 3,286m in altitude. The company also engages in restoring the mountainous landscape and carries out broad information campaigns to heighten the local people and visitors’ awareness of ecological themes.

Zermatt Bergbahnen AG demonstrates exemplary commitment to the environment and to solar energy use in mountainous regions. Thanks to the many visitors and tourists its projects attract great public awareness.
