Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 16 October 2010
With great sorrow, IRENA's announces the death of Dr. Hermann Scheer on October 14th.

Born in April 1944, Hermann Scheer had been a member of the German parliament since 1980. President of the European Association for Renewable Energy (Eurosolar), Dr. Scheer was also General Chairman of the World Council for Renewable Energy. In 1999, he was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize – The Right Livelihood Award- for his "indefatigable work for the promotion of solar energy worldwide". In 2002, Time Magazine recognized him as one of five "Heroes for the Green Century."

"Hermann is the father of IRENA, he is an inspiring model", says Hélène Pelosse, Interim Director General of IRENA. Indeed, over the past two decades, Hermann Scheer has fought for the establishment of a political institution in the form of an international governmental organization for renewable energy. "The long way from the initiative to the foundation of the IRENA shows that you do not only need further leading ideas but also patience and stamina for their realization." said Scheer in retrospect.

"In his speech during the founding conference on IRENA, Hermann reminded us that we shouldn’t lose any more time to accelerate the transition towards renewable energies", says Hélène Pelosse. In more than one thousand articles, in his five books, Hermann Scheer demonstrated both the necessity and feasibility of the transition from fossil and nuclear resources to renewable energies.

  • Award Ceremony of the European Solar Prize 2017 and Symposium 'The Energy Transition in Europe'

Saturday, 18 November 2017, TU the Sky, Vienna

Promoting the successful implementation of renewable energies – with this intention EUROSOLAR has been honoring cities, municipalities, architects, communal and private companies, associations, organizations and cooperatives, journalists and, of course, citizens who actively support the energy transition with the Solar Prizes for 24 years. Pioneers and leaders are put into the focus of public attention and illustrate how the realistic and practicable use of renewable energy is possible and how it contributes to the complete transformation of the energy system.

Towards the end of each year, the award winners are invited to a celebratory event in a European city. Having previously been held in Prague and Barcelona, this year’s edition of the European Solar Prize will be awarded in Vienna. We are pleased to present this year's award winners together with EUROSOLAR-Austria on Saturday afternoon, 18 November 2017, at Technical University Vienna TU the Sky.

In the morning, a symposium will be held on the topic 'The Energy Transition in Europe'. The speakers will present and discuss potentials and conclusions for a sustainable European energy system in the fields of solar architecture, urban planning, energy economy and energy politics. A visit of the buildings of the Technical University will take place just before the symposium.

We would like to invite you to be part of the award ceremony and the exciting symposium. Both events are free of charge. We look forward to welcome you in Vienna!
