Bulgaria has taken an active role in the international efforts to help prevent climate change by supporting the concerted actions of the European Union and the wide-ranging package of measures in the energy sector. These measures give a new impetus to Europe’s energy security and support the EU’s ’20-20-20’ targets. The widespread use of renewable energy sources (‘RES’) and the implementation of energy efficiency measures are among the priorities of the national energy policy and are in conformity with the objectives of the new energy policy for Europe.
Bulgaria 2020 renewable energy targets:
- Overall target: 16% of share of energy generated from renewable sources in gross final energy consumptions;
- Heating and Cooling: 24% of heat consumption met by renewable energy sources;
- Electricity: 21% of electricity demand met by electricity generated from renewable energy sources;
- Transport: 8% of energy demand met by renewable energy sources.
